KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

hi
kde 3.4.0 packages are now in testing repository.
they are prepackages, only showstoppers will be fixed in them.
KDE 3.4.0 will be announced next week, then the abs PKGBUILDS will work again, when official tarballs are made public by kde.
missing i18n packages will be done later.

Please have a look at the new KDE wiki at:
http://wiki2.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE
especially the upgraders should read it!

enjoy the new kde release
best regards
tpowa

the bug that removes files on upgrade, when the packages get updated in wrong order and files were moved from one package to an other, judd knows about it. there is no bug in the bugtracker about it.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I upgraded from RC1 to the packages in testing. At login a small terminal window opens with the message-"Could not start kdeinit, check your installation." I removed the kde packages and re-installed but the problem remains.  Kde does continue to load and run.  This problem also causes kde and X a long time to shutdown with a kdeinit error message in the console.  I did check the wiki and everything was done accordingly.

kdeinit is part of kdelibs, for me it does work,
do you have hal and dbus enabled?
do you have loopback and eth devices in /etc/hosts?

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

an other question, did you already update your db package?
my packages are built against extra packages not testing packages.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I have dbus running, but not hal.  Hal and my cdwriter will not work together so I have the media services turned off.  I have the db 4.3.27-2 package installed.  Did this package come from testing or the current repository?  I will check further into db.  I did not have this error with RC1.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I was running the db package that was in testing.  I rolled back to the package in extra but still have the problem.  Maybe I need to re-install kde 3.4 with that db package installed. Get back later.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

This is my first time testing kde 3.4.  I'm also very new to arch, so apologies if this isn't the right way to go about submitting feedback or if I've missed something fundamental!

I completely removed kde 3.3.2, deleted my .kde directory, rebooted, and installed kde 3.4.  The kde packages are the ONLY packages I am using from testing.  Everything else is from current or extra.

Here are the errors I found in the first few minutes:

1) kdeinit error - same as cascat.
2) kcontrol is missing from k menu
3) editing k menu is broken so it can't be added
4) Konqueror - closing a tab closes the whole window instead
5) trying to change a shortcut icon to a custom icon: browse for custom icon, window crashes in selecting custom icon.  Taskbar disappears.
6) when adding a new shortcut to the Taskbar by browsing for it, the applets on the right (clock and klipper) are caused to jump to the left side of the taskbar.

Any, it's lightning fast and more streamlined than 3.3.2, so I can't wait to get it cleaned up!

no it's the qt version from the bugtracker. not that in testing, i found some patches on kdewebcvs that fix some problems in kde.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

With the qt patched version kde works fine, also it feels quite faster. I still have two kicker crashes when I log out, same with the last RC.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

do i understand it right the kicker crashes did already appeared in rc with the old qt version? so it's not a "new" bug of final packages

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

No kicker crashes here with the patched qt, but some problems still remain:

1) kcontrol is missing from k menu
2) editing k menu is broken so it can't be added
3) when adding a new shortcut to the Taskbar by browsing for it, the applets on the right (clock and klipper) are caused to jump to the middle of the taskbar.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Yes, them appeared with the last RC, but maybe it is just something with my own configuration cos I am using the same .kde directory since kde 3.3... I have no time to check what is causing the crashes cos the session closes just one second after the "crash warning window" appears twice and in the .xsession-errors there is only this:

xset:  bad font path element (#177), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
    Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I must admit kde's speed is starting to frighten me. Thanks for the good job, tpowa.

noah, did you try how it works with a new user? I don't experience any problems you mentioned.
