Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Its no good leaving packages in testing if people aren't going to use the testing repository to test the packages...

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I was used to compile my own KDE on Slackware. I know new major releases are often complex to compile, due to changing of packages and dependencies. So I am not underestimating the work involved to make good KDE packages and packaging is far more difficult then compiling it for just one machine only.

But basicly this is a change of updating packages.  Let's hope pacman changes will prevent this change in the near future. It did cost me a lot of time but the result is there.  Thanks for that
tpowa, much appreciated big_smile

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

What do yoy think about spliting kde packages like in gentoo, debian or pld-linux? I'd like install kpdf, but I don't want to install kdegraphic because of small disk.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I just updated to kde 3.4 and it went smoothly. There is one minor problem though:

I set up my desktop to display device icons, e.g. mounted nfs shares or cd/dvd drives. However, these are not displayed anymore. There is only one device icon and that's one I created manually in the past. Removing .kde/share/config/kdesktoprc did not help. dbus and hal are running. Icons for files placed onto the desktop are displayed normally, so are the icons for home directory, trash bin and kaffeine.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Dominik

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I just wanted to say, that I've tried every single KDE 3.4 release packaged by tpowa and I didn't run into any problems aside from upstream bugs. I've installed final packages almost 2 weeks ago, just after they were released and didn't run into any problem either, although unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to test it for more than two days - yet, that is. Thanks tpowa for the good work, keep it up :-)

Looking at the bugreports, you're right.
Looking at our own stuff: you're wrong.

Right now we have a libexif update in testing, which breaks some packages. As it is testing, it doesn't have to work. In the meanwhile, we re-package the required packages to work with the new libexif and put them in testing one by one, until all problems are resolved. Then we put the whole thing together in extra.

This is the same thing we did with postgresql and db 4.3, which got merged together with KDE 3.4 and Gnome 2.10 (yes, it was a big merge tongue)

Testing is not only the thing where we put new big releases, it's also our playground if we aren't sure about package quality or issues that come up after upgrading the various packages.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Thanks tpowa, the packages are nice..

I hate to do this, like so many other people, but I'm having an odd issue with scrollbars.

I removed KDE first, then reinstalled it.. Seemed to work alright.. Then I tried to load KControl after about 10 minutes of near flawlessness, and it locked up my system, no big deal..

I reset and went back into kde, but then my K menu was empty, which made no sense.

Long story short, kde locks up whenever I attempt to use a slide bar or use the control panel. I have the feeling they are related, is anyone else still having issues with the control panel, or is it just me now?

Also, I used one of the RCs a while ago and I didn't have a single problem, and I didn't even do the upgrade properly for the RC.. Now the official version is causing me grief.. Wish pacman had an easy way to roll back... sad

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

I used a lot of things in the new KDE and the only thing I noticed is the immediate crash of ksim . But that´s the only thing what does not work and I've seen this problem with ksim in various releases, in fact is more often broken than functional big_smile

Found a new one, right-clicking on my desktop, clicking 'configure desktop', selecting 'display' and clicking the 'monitor gamma' tab causes a lockup too sad

token are you a nvidia user?
could it be that also the new driver is causing this problems for you?
if you are a nvidia user, which card are you using?

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Actually, yes, I am, NVidia GeForce2 MX 400, A.K.A. the cheapest card I was able to find at Office Max. I use the official downloads from nvidia, because the arch version doesnt allow me to change the default for via chipsets at 4x (and yes, I already tried it without 4x)..

I'd revert to NV, but the NV drivers seem to not realize what too much brightness means, and its hard to see anything :

And I think I know where you're going with this, so I'll test in NV and see if my problems disappear, and then I'll stop posting if they prove to be nvidia issues sad

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Is it just me, or does this happen to be a problem for anyone else? I've tried installing a few new KDE themes and every single one of them gives me this error when trying to ./configure.

checking for rpath... yes
checking for KDE... libraries /opt/kde/lib, headers /opt/kde/include
checking if UIC has KDE plugins available... no
configure: error: you need to install kdelibs first.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Is the version in the repositories the final 3.4 version?

I know of a bug in the current version in the repos which was fixed before the final release - notice that once you download a file in konqueror, it will never be able to determine the size of the file being downloaded.

Are you sure it is the final version, tpowa?

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

Well, all I know is that about a day before the final release I asked in #kde on freenode about this issue, and I was told it was already fixed in cvs head.

Re: KDE 3.4.1 in [extra]

aww schucks! i have the nvidia problem as well. kde freezes when opening  the control center or the monitor gamma tab. switching to the "nv" drivers  solves the issue. i am using nvidia 7167 with a geforce2 mx card, btw.

EDIT: after a quick visit to the nvidia linux boars, it seems that the freeze problem is not restricted to kde. several people are reporting various freezes using 7167:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ge=4&pp=15

EDIT2: tried to roll back to 6629 using an old PKGBUILD from CVS, but had no luck. apparently the old 6629 package needs patches from "minion.de" that are no longer available on that site. sohooo... can anyone point me to an old 6629 binary for arch?
