Blank screen after xorg closes

I'm having an issue where the screen is blank and no input seems to work after closing X.
It is similar to the issue I was having at boot, but 'nomodeset' fixed that.
I noticed if I 'sudo X -configure' it errors out saying "(II) [KMS] No DRICreatePCIBusID symbol, no kernel modesetting."
Is the modesetting why X wont close correctly? It seems to run fine without an xorg.conf.
If it helps, this is a ppc mac on 2.6.35 with a Radeon 9200 using udev and no hal.

I've tried ssh now too. It quits accepting commands and won't let me open a new connection after the black screen. Any ideas?
