drivers for 3d gaming intel chipset

are the xf86-video-intel the best available graphic drivers for intel chipset? My chipset is a GS45

It's the only driver available for Intel graphics. It's speed though... quite a bit lower compared to Windows. But even in Windows, don't expect gaming on Intel, except for 5+ year old games.

There are things like http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19043 and http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18678 but I have no idea whether there's any performance benefit.

What do you mean by "manage drivers"? Install xf86-video-intel, and you're done. Oh, one addition: pray that the game you want to play will run fast enough. If it's newer than Doom3 it probably won't, and even for Doom3 I'm not sure.

I've got a similar graphics chipset. Windows gaming is possible (I play mostly older games though; Battlefield 2, GTA:SA, Various source engine games). Linux, not a chance. You can play Q3 engine games, but not much more.

Which ones you have installed?

pacman -Qs xf86-video

grep drivers /var/log/Xorg.0.log

will show many drivers, loaded and unloaded, as will

grep intel /var/log/kernel.log

if you use Intel :-)

As far as I can tell, you're using an 256 MB AGP Intel card with intel drivers (the vesa ones are loaded and the unloaded, so you're using the correct intel ones).

You don't really have much of a choice with Intel - only one drivers are supported (although I wouldn't have mind bringing back th -legacy support).
Is there something wrong with your graphics? It all seems fine from here.

The drivers are crappy + it's not the most powerful card in the world.
Maybe you can fix it, but I'm not a compiz guru.

Use those drivers available in the repos, there's no magic here.
If you want compiz to run better. open a new topic, say you have that card and you wonder if compiz can run smoother. Maybe you just need to flip a switch or disable some settings.

How do you start compiz? With what options? While not particularly suited for gaming, the 4500MHD is more than enough for compiz. Though, as karol says, it might be better to open a new thread for that.

using compiz 8.6
tweaked it myself for who would like to tisable the most heavy effects, (about 10 fps per option):
disabled:
reflections
blurr
add helper (eliminates spikes not very annoying)
live viewport from desktop wall plug in
reflections from expo plug in
and disabled indirect rendering

Hmm, direct rendering should be faster, but maybe there's something weird with the intel driver, so you could try indirect rendering and compare. Also, I've no idea whether strict or loose bindings are better with intel. Try both of those, with either direct or indirect rendering.
Apart from that, no idea, it's been a while since I've used compiz, and I think I've never tried on intel graphics.

indirect rendering is the option that slows the most, about 30fps lost with indirect rendering.

surprise surprise, had inaccurate refresh rate, and enabling indirect rendering solved the problem, and it didn't give me the 30fps loss anymore, probably because i switched from xf86-video-intel to xf86-video-intel-newest

EDIT: yes xf86-video-intel-neweset works with indirect rendering, though they give a lot of glitches wuth Kwin, once compiz is activated everything is fine.
