I hope I have chosen the correct forum for this, I guess at least at the beginning it may be something for AUR.
What I am wondering is what is the best way to go about creating packages for the IBMtts (sometimes referred to as viavoice). Now I can't actually package IBMtts itself as its a commercial product, but what I intend to package is the dependencies and versions of gnome-speech and speech-dispatcher, possibly other tools as well like the speakup connector.
First question, should I rebuild packages like gnome-speech and speech-dispatcher or should I create a separate package only containing the module to support IBMtts (in a similar way to how debian splits up some of the optional parts of a larger package)? I get the feeling its probably the former and I should just make sure I use provides correctly to satisfy packages which depends on gnome-speech or speech-dispatcher.
The next question relates to the dependencies. As I won't be able to package IBMtts itself (may be I could see whether voxin http://voxin.oralux.net who sell IBMtts could suitably package it) and IBMtts or the IBMtts SDK (http://ibmtts-sdk.sf.net) is required for compiling and running, how should dependencies read? Should I not depend on either, depend on ibmtts-sdk which is freely available (but possibly will cause difficulties for those with the actual IBMtts) or if voxin will create the package for IBMtts (if not then I could create a dummy which instructs people to install IBMtts manually which people could install) and then have dependencies on IBMtts which IBMtts could have in its provides.
Finally while I think this probably would be an AUR thing, what are the possibilities for it in archlinux considering the IBMtts-sdk which is under BSD license will satisfy the dependencies? I guess the real question is, could there ever be a day when gnome-speech or speech-dispatcher (should it enter the official repositories) could contain support for IBMtts by default?
