nvidia 256.53 + Xorg 1.9: some programs (opera, git-gui) crash X

It's a bit weird, most stuff runs OK, but some (I found opera and git-gui) crashed the X server.

I stepped back and will wait for the nvidia update ...

It's a GeForce GT 220.

[Edit: fixed typo in nvidia version]

Do you have the same problem like me, that X11 is a little bit slow too? (moving windows for example)

Sorry for my bad english.

Re: nvidia 256.53 + Xorg 1.9: some programs (opera, git-gui) crash X

There are some known problems with the Xorg 1.9 and NVidia 256.53 driver (from what I've read particularly in console based applications there are huge performance regressions in the text rendering). However I'm running Xorg 1.9 for a couple of weeks now (while it was still in testing) and didn't notice any (extra) crashes in Opera (which is my main browser). So It's probably a problem in your installation or a combination with your hardware (I have a 9500GT). You could try using nvidia-beta from AUR and see if it fixes the problem.

I did have some issues as well - nvidia-beta fixed them all.

Hmm, I don't have any performance problems, neither when moving windows nor in console applications. It appears that some features in the xorg server lib crash which are used by e.g. opera and git gui.

Thanks for the hint with the beta driver - I'll give it a try, but today I'm too busy.

Re: nvidia 256.53 + Xorg 1.9: some programs (opera, git-gui) crash X

I've never needed help from the forums until now...

I think I have a similar problem: login is fine in all WMs (wmii, i3, awesome...) and GNOME, so I believe the bug does not depend on these. But when I try to run either Opera, Skype, OpenOffice/LibreOffice or Stellarium the window of the application appears for about some milliseconds and shortly after I find myself back at the Login screen. For example Chromium, Firefox, Empathy, Transmission and foobillard run totally normal (haven't tested any other apps yet).

Yesterday I tried the nouveau driver with nouveau-dri and everything was OK (even the somewhat buggy 3D in foobillard xD). Then I tried the nvidia-beta (260...) and the bug showed up again. Also gave the new Ubuntu 10.10 a shot and initially was happy Stellarium and OpenOffice worked but right after the update had completed and the following reboot, the bug showed up, again. (BTW geforce 6200 here).

So, kernel 2.6.35, Xserver or related libs, nvidia-driver or something weird between all of them...??!!
(I can't use Google Docs forever, do I?)

Or could a dual monitor setup with xinerama enabled have something to do with it?
Perhaps should try that out... Oh and neither do I have any performance issues.

[EDIT: Actually it is xinerama, everything runs just fine without! But i3 without xinerama kind of s****, just as with TwinView... not nice!]

See these two threads that seem to be about the same problem:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=106125
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=106100

I still use Xorg 1. 8 ...
