Hi, i just migrated to Arch from ubuntu and i installed the 64bit version, im experiencing slow resolve internet when using pacman to update the system and install the desktop, for example when i do "pacman -S kde" it will last like 15 secs when starting a download once it started is normally fast (200~300KB/s) but the resolve is super slow....
i tried disabling ipv6 running pdnsd and other alternatives from the guide and the forums but the problem persist... is there any real reason for this?
im running Arch10.05_x64, on Phenom II x4 925, 4Gb Ram, WD 320GB....
any help would be very appreciated....

Try changing mirrors you are using

See the rankmirrors discussion in the beginners guide
CPU-optimized Linux-ck packages @ Repo-ck • AUR packages • Zsh and other configs

Also take a look at this page: http://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/
That page will show you what mirrors are in sync.
If you live in the North East and even the midwest rit.edu is a fantastic mirror!

its not the mirrors, like i said it last too much before starting, its the same with ping or any other app that uses internet... if i do ping each iteration lasts 15segs before appearing in pacman its the same each package you install last a lot to even show up but when it shows up (connected) it downloads normally.

Ensure that yours /etc/hosts look like this
#
# /etc/hosts: static lookup table for host names
#
#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost [hostname_from_rc.conf]
If that doesn't help change your DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf, for example to 208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS).

Shot in the dark, but you could try if disabling IPv6 helps. Locally caching DNS (for example with dnsmasq) could help the symptoms, but isn't really solving the issue... Can you post a "dig www.google.com"?

I had the same type of problem and found that it was only slow when using "ftp" sites. I'm using reflector to find the latest up to date sites and now use grep to only include "http" sites.
reflector -l 10 -r --grep http -o /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
You don't have to use reflector if you don't want to, but you can try commenting out any "ftp" sites in your mirrorlist.

i also found pacman very slow to start with. the three things i found most effective in boosting speeds were:
(1) add all mirrors to /etc/hosts (eliminates delays in resolving domain names)
(2) enable wget/curl in /etc/pacman.conf (helps when synching the database)
(3) install powerpill (for simultaneous downloads)

Try setting the thingy(somewhere in the file) from /etc/nsswitch.conf to "hosts: files dns"
