[SOLVED][KDE, intel] Screen goes gray when switching windows

Hello,

on my EEE netbook, since the xorg update, I guess --noticed today, as I use it for school only --, the screen goes gray after I switch windows via alt+tab. This does not happen every time, but eventually it occures. In that case the whole screen has color of not yet painted window, and the DE is seemingly not responding to anything, I can still move my mose though and cursor moves too. Switching to text console works, but xserver restart is needed to get things back to normal.

I have been using graphics system raster, but change to default didn't solved the issue. The same goes for -lcd font filters. System is up-to-date and uses some SELinux packages from the AUR if that matters, but it should not, as they are not graphics nor DE related.

Would you have any sugestions? I should not be doing any potentially risky operations till thursday, as I need the computer for school and don't have any other available.

EDIT: The situation is simmilar as when I run a program, first a fullscreen window is painted gray, and when everything is loaded its content is painted. This lasts few second in case of big applications like Kontact. In the case of mentioned bug it is like the content of window never painted.

EDIT: So I recompiled bespin-svn, as I remembered, that this package likes to cause trobles, when it is older, and I wanted to mark this solved, as it behaved during the day, but just few minutes ago, the problem happend again.

EDIT: I don't understand it. On monday it happed several times during day. On tuesday it happend once. Since wednesday it didn't happend. Sould I start to beleave in ghosts?

Ok, happend again several times today. Didn't happen at any other PC, but I do not have other Intel based, in case it is graphics related.

As for log (not like I have an idea what to look for) I have error loading fbdev module and some touchpad errors in xorg.log (not imediatelly after the problem), and some Networkmanager warnings.

Damn. Now I failed three times in a row to switch from konsole to rekonq in order to copy those logs. Anyway this is tail -n 50 everything.log (right now X11 screen is just gray and mouse cursor). SELinux can be ignored as it is set permissive.

OK, installed intel and mesa from [testing]. Well, will see if it happens or not. The question is how long. :-/

Be careful with the intel driver from testing. It made my system unable to utilize desktop effects. Instead, I used Mesa from testing by itself (and dependencies) and it made it a lot better.

I'm hoping that the new Xorg, Mesa, and Intel are ironed out soon because there are other issues that the latest Mesa didn't solve, such as artifacts on the panel when suspending then re-enabling desktop effects.

Thanx, jlacroix, but for me desktop effects are auto-disabled since KDE 4.5 (which is kinda shame, as they worked flawlessly in older KDE -- but that is another story).

For that just disable the compatibility check and that will solve it.

I tried it once, but the result was worser than with 4.4.x, too slow and even some rendering issues, if I remember correctly. Well, I may give it a try again some time, but first I need to have this issue solve, as it is pretty irritating.

Overall, I would try a combination of starting with a fresh .kde4 folder, disabling compatibility checks, enabling desktop effects, and then reboot. You might try starting with a new .config as well after backing up the original. With all of that in combination, it should work.

Desktop effects have boosted in speed for me as of KDE 4.5.2 so I think the experience *should* be better with a fresh configuration. I'm thinking desktop effects may actually solve your issue with the new Mesa 7.9, given that it changes how the screen is redrawn.

Now thanx, there is something to it. I will try it if the present try proves insufficient, as it is my school notebook, I need it configured and working, I would like to touch it minimally during the term.
The most anoying about this is, that I don't know how to reproduce it, didn't find any pattern. Sigh.

For the desktop effects, if you disable blur, you won't have to bypass any checks and it will be faster. If you are seeing graphical glitches however, I would just disable effects altogether.

Also be careful if you are just pulling parts of [testing] that is almost always a bad idea.

I think, that I disabled blur, but next boot KDE disabled the efects again.

Yes I had a bad feeling about doing it to my Arch. Though its just for reasons of testing.

So no gray screen since 2010-10-20. And after latest upgrade effects work nicely again. Will see if everything goes okey in the week, but it seems to be solved somehow.
