It seems that something with my fonts is messed up. The fonts called "Sans", "Serif", and "Monospace", have boxes for a majority of the characters. I am not sure what did this, but every thing that GNOME uses the default "Sans", etc. fonts for has "box" characters instead of readable text -- this includes the font in GDM and the text-file previews in Nautilus. Other fonts do not have this problem, however.
Any idea of how to fix this?

Boxes mean the character doesn't exist in the font. Install the DejaVu fonts and remove the Bitstream Vera fonts. The fonts "Sans", "Serif" and "Monospace" are generic labels mapped to a font, this is usually Vera by default. DejaVu has a much larger character set than the Vera fonts.
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

I do not seem to have the Bitstream Vera fonts installed, and I do have the DejaVu fonts. I have tried reinstalling the DejaVU fonts to no avail.
EDIT Upon checking /usr/share/fonts, I did find a Bitstream Vera folder -- strange.... I renamed it those "fonts" seems to be fixed now! Thanks! Just a question, though, why didn't those "fonts" (Sans, etc.) have even the most basic characters, like the Latin alphabet, while the Bitstream fonts had them when looking in the character map?

They were probably mapped to a font that didn't exist, since Vera wasn't installed.
