Mesa 7.9: short-term freezes on Intel GMA 945 with KWin's compositing

No matter the X server or Xf86-video-intel version, I experience short-term freezes when using KWin's compositing. The X server stops refreshing for about 20 seconds. I am able to move the mouse cursor and sometimes mouse events are executed (after the end of the freeze?), but not visibly. I can switch to the terminal by doing Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc. Switching to and returning from termainal does not have any effect on the freeze, however. Turning desktop effects off 'solves' the issue.

I guess I should narrow it down, e.g. see whether it is a certain effect, but I am quite busy with mission-critical work right now and will have to postpone this for a few days. I will report a bug once I did that.

I had the same problem. Disabling some of the effects helped, especially blur. Try turning some effects off, but not disalbing compositing altogether.
