choose display in text mode

I had to disable modesetting in the boot options for some reason, and am using vga=...; I wonder if there are any options to select which display to use..? I would preferably like to have the text on my laptop screen, but only the external monitor is used. I suppose the information is in some document (kernel documentation, "video=..." perhaps) somewhere and perhaps obvious if you know what to look for, but I couldn't figure it out...
