[SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

I'm running most recent KDE version in the arch repositories, and I'm having one issue. The shutdown, logout, sleep, restart, etc. buttons in the kmenu don't work. I'm using kdm, so they're there, but clicking on them does absolutely nothing. Any help you may offer would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

can you use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the logoff dialog?

if so, do the buttons in the logoff dialog work?

ctrl-alt-del doesn't do anything either.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

Starting with a fresh .config folder solved it for me a while back.

try running the following in a terminal:

qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer org.kde.KSMServerInterface.logout -1 -1 -1

that should either run the logout dialog, or (hopefully) display some relevant error messages.

you could also try temporarily renaming the file "~/.kde4/share/config/ksmserverrc" and rebooting.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

After an update of KDE, very recently, I have the same problem.
I've not been able to find a solution so far BUT to turn the machine off or reboot you can press Alt+s (after you are brought to the log in screen again) and select the desired action.
Hope this helps ... and that the problem gets resolved soon.

if that solves it for everyone, great! but it would be nice to know which particular file(s) caused the problem.

It was investigated in an Arch bug report a while back. Unfortunately, no one figured it out. It seemed that people thought it was Akonadi initially, but that didn't solve it. I wish I knew which one it was as well.

Your idea seemed good so I also renamed the .kde2/.../../ksmserverrc but to no avail.

The interesting thing is that a few days ago when I did the update of the system  it **DID** work... but only once and then reverted back to failing to shut down.

Based on that experience I think it  is either a permissions thing (somewhere) or a misconfiguration.

I'll keep trying ... if I find something I'll post.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

I removed the ksmserverrc file, and it's back up. I also switched from xf86-video-ati to catalyst to xf86-video-radeonhd back to xf86-video-ati, but I think it was the ksmserverrc file.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

I had the same issue and the following fixed it for me:

You may have changed your permissions of /var/lib/kdm, (to fix an older bug which made kdm forget the last username who logged in) you should get an error-message like:

[2010-10-18 18:18] warning: directory permissions differ on var/lib/kdm/
filesystem: 775 package: 755

while upgrading kdebase-workspace. You can look for that message in /var/log/pacman.log

Just remove /var/lib/kdm and reinstall kdebase-workspace with

rm -rf /var/lib/kdm/
pacman -S kdebase-workspace

note: be aware that this will also remove /var/lib/kdm/kdmsts which will be recreated after the first login.

Greetings

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

i had this problem from today on after an update of phonon-xine. it seems, that all system-notifications sounds stopped working. also when trying to play them manually from systemsettings, systemsettings would crash. funny thing was, that still prgramms using phonon like amarok didn't run into any problems. anyway, i think as system notification sounds stopped working, also the logout-buttons did. there must be a loop that only actually does the logout procedure after that sound is played, so after the sound fails, there is no logout. probably this problem can be solved by deactivating the shutdown-sound, i didn't try. my solution for now is to go with phonon-mplayer-git from aur witch does the job without problems. i'll have another look on phonon-xine after the next update. maybe this is a new problem, and not related to the one described above, but after i deleted a lot of config files without any success, you might wanna give a try do a different phonon backend before that if you run into similar problems..

@miro279
about the sound issue, make sure libpulse is installed. Remove ~/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc ~/.config/kde.org/{Phonon-Xine.xine.conf,libphonon*}. Try a new user.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

no luck here. deleting the config and also defining a brand new user results in the decribed behaviour. phonon-xine plugin doesn't work for system-notifications for me.
This is a bit offtopic, but phonon-gstreamer works with system-notifications for me, but not with amarok- so this is no option either..

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

I resolved this problem by instaling phonon-vlc. Then in systemsetting i just changed backend to vlc and back to xine. Now sound works and shutdown button too. Without delete any files.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

This just happened to me with some recent updates (which included phonon-* 4.4.3-1).
After selecting either of shutdown/restart/logoff from the K menu (or pressing ctrl-alt-del), dialog appeared, but accepting it, dialog dissappears but nothing happens.
Also, auto-hibernation by critical battery level was not allowed, with the message "ksmserver prevented....".

After reading this thread, I deleted ksmserverrc with no luck. then 'killall ksmserver' activated the reboot.
I was using phonon-xine, so after the reboot I switched to phonon-gstreamer and everything seems to work fine now smile

EDIT: oh, and I *have* sounds enabled for logon/logoff etc.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

Downgrading phonon, phonon-xine, xine-lib (or maybe some of those) packages solved the issue.

I've recently hit this issue.  Is there an open bug report?
