Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

I update my system everyday and after yesterdays updates I lost my login and logout sounds on KDE and the shutdown buttons stopped working also. I installed phonon-vlc as ArchHK suggested and it seems to work.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

at the moment this problem seems definitly related to phonon-xine for a lot of people. not sure though if it is related to arch or generell upstream development of phonon-xine. i'll do a bug report at the weekend if nothing happens till then.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

Faced with the same problem after updating the system, began to understand and find the source of the problem, it turned out to phonon-pulse which I collected from aur. After his removal and installation phonon everything worked (also removed kdemultimedia-kmix-pulse, put the usual). Now everything works and the most interesting change I have not seen, ie kmix and phonon now supports pulseaudio in the database and phonon appeared dependent on libpulse (new package).

I resolved this problem by instaling phonon-vlc. Then in systemsetting i just changed backend to vlc and back to xine. Now sound works and shutdown button too. Without delete any files.

I had the same problem after upgrading yesterday and had problems with dokphin which I solved by reinstalling phonon.  Dokphin worked again but I could not logout, shutdown or restart using the leave button.  I tried ArchHK's suggestion of installing phonon-vlc and then changing the systemsettings of backend to vlc as preferred option. Now, everthing's seems to be working out fine.

bug was closed again, marked as a duplicate of this here https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/21895 not sure if this is right, as its xine and not gstreamer this time and also Im not using pulsaudio.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

May be this is related to this bug.
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228005

KDE will not shutdown if the phonon-backend cannot play *.ogg file. I also got this bug, and had to reinstall xine , phonon-xine a couple times before it works again.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

thats what seems to be the problem. trying to play a .ogg file with xine-ui results in an error about the ogg demuxer plugin, as the kde notifications are also encoded in a ogg container it explains the missing logout button problem. we still don't know why xine has problems playing ogg files, but as it is a specific xine problem, it shouldn't be a arch bug.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

ok, i installed xine-ui to debug this problem and found some complains about libspeex missing, also xine wouldn't play any ogg files as expexted. after installing speex xine plays ogg files again and with that the problem of not playing system-notification sounds dissappeares also.
so if you want to use xine as a phonon backend, install speex also! i don't know why xine needs speex for ogg support, but as it seems to be like that, i would suggest to add speex as a dependency of xine-lib.

Nice catch! But speex is already listed as optdependence of xine-lib. I'll add two lines to KDE wiki page.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

good! by the way, does this mean the kde sounds are encoded with speex? it's supposed to be a codec for voice or? or does this version of xine-lib refuse to play ogg files when speex is missing no matter witch codec was used in them (which would be sound like a bug to me)?

ctrl-alt-del doesn't do anything either.

try running the following in a terminal:

qdbus org.kde.ksmserver /KSMServer org.kde.KSMServerInterface.logout -1 -1 -1

that should either run the logout dialog, or (hopefully) display some relevant error messages.

you could also try temporarily renaming the file "~/.kde4/share/config/ksmserverrc" and rebooting.

I get this error message:

Cannot find 'org.kde.KSMServerInterface.logout' in object /KSMServer at org.kde.ksmserver

I have checked my groups and daemons and they are the way they should be as mentioned above.

I am using KDM in the daemons section. Are any of you using it in inittab or possibly even xinitrc?

UPDATE:
Installing Speex allowed me to use the buttons! AND with sound!

Thanks guys!

This also fixed my problem with the system notifications sounds not playing and, as an added bonus, it also fixed my problem with the Logout/Restart/Shutdown buttons not working.

Nice one! and thanks for your help big_smile

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

Have you all double checked this:

"If you can't shutdown/restart etc from KDE ensure the following:
speex is installed
sudo sed -i 's/^AllowShutdown=Root/AllowShutdown=All/g' /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc"

Hopefully it fixes the issues and we mark this as resolved? It did for me a while back. smile

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

i have speex, and AllowShutdown in kdmrc is set to All, but I still can't use the buttons

edit1: also, if I go to systemsettings and try to change phonon backend, as soon as I click on phonon there on the left side, systemsettings crashes.. probably related

edit2: fixed that crash by running systemsettings from konsole, changing it, and now I can use it by just clicking an icon.. it's set to phonon-gstreamer now

edit3: rebooted and now shutdown/reboot buttons are again working properly - fixed smile

I had a similar issue a few weeks ago and all I did was prefer the VLC Xine backend, fixed it immediately.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

what if I still have that problem? Plasma 5.7.5, Logout does nothing.

reboot and shutdown is gone.

battery indicator is gone.

I've reinstalled upower several times
I think hal is no longer something we should install ? am I wrong?

what else could I check ?

my system used to work fine... some updates broke everything power related.

what could it be?

thanks

Re: [SOLVED] KDE shutdown button won't work

You don't have the same problem; plasma 5 wasn't a thing back in 2010, so OP wasn't using it.

Don't necrobump, you should know the rules by now.
