Can't record on ALSA

I've been able to record on ALSA forever, except for the last few days.  The box on Audacity that usually lets you select mic or line is grayed out... anyone know how to stop this?

Did you update anything before its stoped working like udev or the kernel.  It sounds like you don't have the right permissions for the device.  Check as root and see if they are enabled.
