Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

So for a while now I have the problem that any flash video that I click to fullscreen will give me a grey fullscreen with only audio and no video. Since it annoyed me at last so much that I tried to look into it, I found out that this is due to hardware acceleration being activated and it should simply be deactivated in the flash settings.
Unfortunately the settings dialogue does not work for me. I right-click on a video, and select settings, the dialogue pops up but I can't click anything there, it just does not respond. I have deleted the .macromedia folder in my /home, this just changed the initial tab of the settings dialogue to the display settings (before it was set to webcam settings), which is why I know that hardware acceleration is really active and might cause the problem of the grey fullscreen. Still nothing responds to clicking in the dialogue.
I also tried it in chromium instead of firefox, but there the flash videos do not load at all, meaning the box where the video should be is just black and I can't access the settings there.

So, how am I supposed to change the settings when I cannot change the settings? As far as I found out there seems not to be a simple config file where I could change it, it has to be changed in the flash itself. Any ideas?

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

Update: I finally realized that you can switch through the elements in the settings dialogue with TAB. But still I can't uncheck the "Hardware acceleration" button, I am able to switch the dialogue windows and set or unset stuff anywhere EXCEPT the hardware acceleration... why is that?

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

Thank you very much Jonathan, this bug was driving me crazy!

I was able to check out the hardware acceleration checkbox (press space), so it's weird you can't switch it off.

EDIT:
Without acceleration got a huge slowdown. Ditched the flash plugin and got the new plugin "Square" (see flashplugin-prerelease). Works great.
Still, can't wait to see the death of flash in favor of HTML5.

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

I'm glad that my problem helped you wink
I kind of suspected that switching off the hardware acceleration might lead to choppy video performance, still I would like to try it.

Since you mentioned the different flashplugin I remembered to look for the version 9 flashplugin in AUR, when I install that, fullscreen flash works like a charm again. The only problem with that is though, somehow firefox crashes each time I want to close the tab containing the video, so in the end it solves one problem and creates a new one. I also tried the flashplugin-prerelease that you mentioned and it does not work for me, so it is like the current flashplugin, grey fullscreen. Also in none of the three versions I am able to uncheck the hardware acceleration.

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

Check out /etc/mms.cfg and this guide, maybe something helpful in there (just skimmed it, p59 looks promising).

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

Good call hokasch, I did see mms.cfg mentioned as solution for some other problems, but I never found out where to look up these commands. Unfortunately it only lets you switch the validation for hardware acceleration on or off, which means you can override that flash switches it off even though you could use it. So no direct deactivation of hardware acceleration by the config file.

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

Bummer. Have you tried setting hardware acc on some simpler flash objects?
Maybe you will have to take another route and find out why hardware acceleration gives you grey screens. What graphics do you have, and are you on x86_64/used ndiswrapper?

Re: Fixing fullscreen flash & flash settings unclickable

If you are using Compiz or the Kwin effects you can also try to play with the option "Disable Compositing in Fullscreen" or "Disable suspending Desktop Effects in Fullscreen" or something like that.

For me it helped a little bit.
