[Solved] Need help setting up Xorg on a netbook

I am in the process of setting up a Arch install on my Netbook and having problems with setting up Xorg.  My system has a VIA CX700/VX700 unichrome pro graphics card, I installed the xf86-video-openchrome driver and loaded it.  When trying to use Xorg with auto detection it seems like the vsync is off.  Here is the Xorg.0.log file that is created.  When I ran Xorg -configure the xorg.conf file generated didn't list any possible resolutions other than 0x0.

If it helps this is the xorg.conf that it wants to use.

How does it work without any xorg.conf?

What do you mean, sorry I don't quite understand your question?  The reason I tried without a xorg.conf file is in hopes that xorg and udev, or hal although I think that was replaced in favor of udev in the recent Xorg update IIRC, will be able to correctly detect my hardware and generate sane settings by default, this method worked fine on my desktops, but something about ether the graphics card, as stated in my original post a VIA CX700/VX700 unichrome pro or the 10 inch screen is throwing Xorg off.  When I tried running the Xorg -configure and test the xorg.conf file it generated it did the same thing.  I don't necessarily have to have X11 working through autoconfig having a xorg.conf file does not bother me as long as I can get it working.

I apologise, I didn't make the link between 'with auto detection' and without a configuration file...

If you have the refresh rates of your monitor, you could try to set them manually in your xorg.conf, and use e.g. gtf to generate modelines of the resolutions you want, and add those to the configuration as well.

No I don't have the refresh rates of the monitor, but I'm sure I can look it up.

Re: [Solved] Need help setting up Xorg on a netbook

Is there a way of calculating the vertical and horizontal refresh rates?  I have tried googling for it but I didn't come up with anything, if it helps the notbook I am trying to use is this and the native resolution for it is 1024 x 600.

Re: [Solved] Need help setting up Xorg on a netbook

Ok so it seems like gtf is able to calculate the horizontal and vertical refresh rates:

The output that it gave me for a resolution of 1024x600 at 60 Hz is

# 1024x600 @ 60 Hz (GTF) hsync: 37.32 kHz; pclk: 48.96 MHz
Modeline "1024x600_60.00" 48.96 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 622 -HSync+Vsync

Now I just need to figure out exactly how to use this in my xorg.conf file

Setting the Modeline information in my xorg.conf file didn't help, if anything my screen looks worse.  The Xorg wiki page is not of much help

Re: [Solved] Need help setting up Xorg on a netbook

Ok I manged to figure out what my problem was, it was a two part problem that I figured out by booting up Puppy Linux and once I found that Xorg worked there I took a look at its xorg.conf file to see what it did.  The first difference was the driver I was trying to use the openchrome driver Puppy used the vesa driver.  The next difference was the resolurtion, I was trying to use 1024x600 Puppy used 800x600.  Making those changes to my xorg.conf file and a quick restart of X11 and hey look Xorg is alive!  Incase anyone here is wondering why I don't just use the 800x600 resolution with openchrome, I have tried and it still doesn't work.  Not sure if this is a bug with openchrome or not, but I will sure try it again once unichrome-dri 7.9-1 comes out of the testing repo.
