Hello,
I've just installed Archlinux on my Sony Vaio E and the touchpad isn't working at all on X. I've installed the xf86-input-evdev and xf86-input-synaptics packages but I can move the pointer only with an external usb mouse. What should I do?
Thank you

Did you check /var/log/Xorg.0.log whether your touchpad is recognized by X?

I'm not very expert, but maybe these are the lines of Xorg.0.log about the touchpad:
[ 22.117] (**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"
[ 22.117] (**) Option "xkb_model" "evdev"
[ 22.117] (**) Option "xkb_layout" "it"
[ 22.118] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Sony Vaio Jogdial (/dev/input/event2)
[ 22.118] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring)
[ 22.118] (II) config/udev: Adding input device Sony Vaio Jogdial (/dev/input/mouse0)
[ 22.118] (II) No input driver/identifier specified (ignoring)

I also have the E-series and had some touchpad issues.

I edited the 10-evdev.conf and 10-synaptics.conf files as indicated in your post but my touchpad isn't working at all anyway. I get the same output in Xorg.0.log.

Did you also do what is suggested as a reply to my topic? https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=104769

That topic is about a proper configuration of the synaptics options, but my problem is that my touchpad isn't working at all. It's somehow detected by the system but it appears to be dead. Under windows it works perfectly. This is the output of my /proc/bus/input/devices about the touchpad:

Is hal running?
I don't think the jogdial is the touchpad, but rather the custom buttons above the keyboard. I have jogdial listed in addition to a synaptics touchpad

I had the same issue on my vaio EA. Googling a bit a found that adding i8042.nopnp to the kernel line on my menu.lst solved the problem!
