[SOLVED] Login: Critical error - immediate abort

my system will not allow me to log in. on any tty, with any username, if I enter my password correctly I get the error "Login: Critical error - immediate abort" and it returns to the Login: prompt.
I am using 'slim' as my display manager, and it is unable to log me in as well.

help? what could be wrong?

I do not know what is causing this.

1)  have you changed anything.  Particularly anything to do with pam, or made any changes affecting /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow?
2) Does the problem still occur if you do not use Slim?

You're right, it was a change in pam. I had edited /etc/security/pam_env.conf to add /usr/bin/local to PATH, and it somehow messed up pam.
hmm.
