No sound after updating to kernel 2.6.36 from [testing]

Hello,
I updated to kernel 2.6.36 and after i rebooted i had no sound . I use alsa + pulseaudio ... my configuration was working before the update. This is a kernel bug/ i have to change the configuration after this update?

Thank you and best regards

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

You are probably afected with this: http://www.spinics.net/lists/alsa-devel/msg39189.html
Use the patch provided there. Tested and working good on intel hda!
Have fun. smile

Re: No sound after updating to kernel 2.6.36 from [testing]

Hello,
It seams that it's the same problem (after one restart worked)...after another one didn't worked. But the solution provided in the link implies that i should recompile the kernel.   I think i will wait for a patched/fixed version to be released.

From the replies in that post it seems that problem have been resolved in alsa-devel git tree (i will try install from AUR alsa-lib-git). I will reply with the results.

Thank you
Stefan

Can you try to reboot after adding "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf ?
After upgrading from 2.6.34 to 2.6.35 I had to add that otherwise alsa loads the wrong config.

What luck? You just need to recompile the kernel with that fix. Or wait for the kernel update. I wonder if 2.6.36-ARCH is gonna come with this fix...

What doesnt work? Did you recompile the kernel or just try ChoK's suggestion? or both?

Re: No sound after updating to kernel 2.6.36 from [testing]

I have tried Chok's suggestion and isn't working. The problem seems to be the same with the one in the link provided, but i don't want to recompile the kernel(no time to do it ). It's seems that if i shutdown for a few hours it works, but not if i reboot. I think i will wait for a archlinux kernel  that will fix this problem (even if it's 2.6.37).

So, I've got the same issue - tried to write a PKGBUILD using the patches pointed out by archman-cro, but they fail to apply.  I'm likely doing it incorrectly, but I'm not sure specifically what's wrong.  Does anyone have a working PKGBUILD with the aforementioned patches?

Thanks, it works perfectly.  I think I was doing something wonky in putting the patch together.

Has this issue been resolved in the newest kernel update, 2.6.36.1?  I looked at the annoucement and I couldn't find any commit related to this issue.

Re: No sound after updating to kernel 2.6.36 from [testing]

ssri, the issue the OP brought up is probably quite specific to his machine (I use alsa and pulseaudio and 2.6.36 from [testing], no problems with sound). It is not a general kernel issue. If you have issues better to bring them up in a separate thread unless you believe you have the same issue as the OP.

Re: No sound after updating to kernel 2.6.36 from [testing]

ngoonee, I use alsa+phonon and have the same affected hardware (HDA Intel ad198x) here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/alsa-devel/msg39189.html.  Like the OP, it was a crapshoot if my sound worked at all when using testing/kernel26 and, like others, applying the patch fixed it.  The affected audio chip is rather popular with laptops, including my business HP, and is far from being an esoteric piece of hardware.  In fact, this regression hits all Intel HDA - Analog Devices (adNNNN) chips (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.alsa.devel/78422).   To make a long story short, I checked the patches for 2.6.36.1 and the patch that fixes this regression did not make it in.  So, I guess I answered my question and will have to compile the kernel with the sound-fix patch.

I had exactly the same problem of intel sound card not being detected after the kernel upgrade. It got fixed by adding the above line to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
