hwd -s....what happened?

I got the new hwd update the other day and its not detecting alot of my modules or devices. when I do a hwd -s I get:

CPU & Cache: Processor 0 is AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2000+ 1658MHz, 256 KB Cache 
 /etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 12: PS/2: No such file or directory 
 /etc/hwd/SysFILE: line 21: 845C: command not found

   Video      : No X

the version before this found my sound and video no problems. It's not giving me any problems now because I've run it before the update, but I can imagine the confusion and complications a newbie would have with this ouput.

whats that all about? I get the same errors on another computer.

hmm ... it seems that files are missing

i suspect that, because some files were moved from hwd package to lshwd package, that pacman lost these in the update (same bug that hinders us to update from kde 3.3 to kde 3.4 directly)

try removing hwd and lshwd (pacman -R hwd lshwd) and then reinstalling it (pacman -S hwd) - this would install hwd and lshwd

if then the same problem re-appears, my suspection is wrong and hwd is broken in some way

Still having problems here.
It does not detect my networkcards Besides that, it loads alsa modules which currently don't work on my machine. And the refreshrates of the monitor are wrong as well, they are too high according to the manual.

can u please provide more information? what type of network card (pci/pcmcia) ?

regarding the refreshrates, im only guessing (since i havnt looked at latest hwd yet) thats the ddcxinfo-arch output. u can try execute it manually and test its results. ddcxinfo-arch should probe what your monitor supports.
regarding the alsa modules - obviously lshwd cant know they dont work with your hw... best thing i can suggest is putting them in modprobe blacklist or removing them so they wont be autoloaded (if requested todo so).

for the rest, you'll have to wait for Rasat's return

As you can see, the ethernet controllers (Intel Etherpress Pro 100 and onboard VIA Rhine) are not listed. I did not load a driver for the Intel card, but the VIA Rhine is up and running.

Ethernet: It missed the 2 nics as well: 3Com 905C TX/M and the SMC 9432 TX (eepro100). The ISDN card and the floppy drive are missing as well. The were both detected during boot. The refresh rates for this monitor are (Samsung SM 152V) :

Al nics are PCI so that should not be a problem I guess, machines are up to date as well.

now that you say it: i have e100 and network up and running but hwd -s is not seeing it. the modem module does not exist. monitor: strange: i have a LCD with UXGA and it tells about H and V-sync rates instead of LCD-vesa.

I get the same results with the nic as well until I run hwd -e then it displayed that information. The sample X configure that hwd -s produces does nothing for the nics anyways.
My monitored probed fine even after the reinstall, but Im sure not everyone's will. You can always go back and edit X.

I prefer to configure my X manually. hwd -s produces a unreadable and way too long configfile.
But that is not what this topic is about, it is about hwd not working correctly.

puntmuts and dp : can u please test lshwd by itself to see if the problem is with lshwd or with hwd formatting its output? (to test, use "lshwd -cc -a")

mine works fine.. initially I ran into the first problem in this thread, but a

pacman -R lshwd hwd
pacman -S hwd

fixed it and everything detects fine

just a note about the refresh rates: the ones listed are reported directly by the monitor as what they are capable of. Sometimes these values aren't right. My laptop at home technically only supports 1400x900 resolution, but the monitor reports 1024x768 as the max... so DDC can be off a bit.... if all else fails, ignore what DDC reports and use what you know works (I have to force NoEDID=1 for my nvidia card to get it to work)

what laptop is this? (just to put the producer to my company blacklist ;-) )

a dead one - it's the usb wintv device (external usb1.1) and it needs "usbvision" module that i never was able to compile - so no television for over 3 years for now ... one good thing has it: i have more time for other things

if someone is able to make this module compile agains the kernel26, please let me know

More seriously, I guess I won't be very exploratory when I say that last hwd release is utterly broken, producing pretty strange and incomplete results on both of my Arch boxes. Poke me in the left eye with a spoon (not to support forks and other bombs), if you desire more info on that.
