iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Please help, I have:
- an iphone 4 (frimware 4.1)
- libimobiledevice (1.03)
- usbmuxd (last one)
- ipheth (I also tried ipheth-git)
- ideviceinstaller

ifconfig -a shows: cipsec0, l0, eth0, vboxnet0, wlan0 ... nothing for the iphone

My phone is connected and recognized, I can browse it with pcmanfm, I can look at the installed applications using ideviceinstaller, but I CANNOT tether...
ipheth is registered (I put it in rc.conf) but it does not say anything when I plug the phone with tethering activated!
the only line in dmesg is:
usb 2-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
nothing about ipheth
It used to work like a charm on ubuntu...

Any idea?

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

usb 2-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
ipheth 2-4:4.2: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached
usbcore: registered new interface driver ipheth

Unless you are running the testing kernel, the iPhone 4 didn't make it into the device list until 2.6.36 (http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … f1478732db), so that is probably your problem. I'm running that kernel now, and I have an 'eth2' device here when I plug in my phone.

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

That is a much scarier proposition then just installing the next stable kernel from [testing], I hope you realize that...

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Haha, well after selecting my packages (I used to build my kernel a few years back), I waited 2 hours for it to compile and the laptop crashed due to overheating! :s
I'm installing the testing one now...
Thanks for the heads up, much better idea!

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Sorry I was away for a few days...
So yeah, now ipheth does recognize my phone's modem and network-manager start the connection process, but then it fails, the phone says "tethering" and the network device is registered but somehow the connection does not work... :s
Any more ideas?
Thanks

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

I have the same problem. Have updated to 2.6.36. I've iPhone 3G with iOS 4.1. I've tried with both libimobiledevice-git and libimobiledevice from Arch repos, with both ipheth-utils and ipheth-git. The interface is recognized by ipheth and networkmanager but there's no connection: networkmanager keeps spinning at the connecting phase. On the phone the internet sharing status is on, as if the connection HAS been established at the phone end. And yes, I have tried running ipheth-pair as is adviced in the Arch wiki in the situation where the interface is recognized by networkmanager but does not connect, to no avail. I have added the interface to rc.conf:

INTERFACES=(!eth0 !eth1 !wlan0 !bnep0)

Eth1 here the iPhone interface. Although there seems to be no difference whether or not it is there.

ifconfig eth1:

eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:24:36:4B:43:79
          inet6 addr: fe80::224:36ff:fe4b:4379/64 Scope:Link

Yes sad At least bluetooth tethering works but I would love to get this sorted out, because bluetooth is always a few extra steps.

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Yeah I mean I have MYWI that works fine, but the USB ethernet connection is more stable from my experience.
I haven't even bothered with bluetooth, I used to do it but it's even less stable...

Yeah, when I use bluetooth tethering the connection usually keeps breaking every 10-20 minutes. I haven't jailbroken the phone after I updated to iOS4 so haven't tested MYWI so far...

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

I have the same problem, for me it happend when I updated:

[2010-11-08 16:48] upgraded networkmanager (0.8-1 -> 0.8.1-1)
[2010-11-08 16:48] upgraded network-manager-applet (0.8-3 -> 0.8.1-2)

I had been skipping the update for months now (because I'm using just Openbox so I usually have problems starting the nm-applet as a normal user) and I finally got distracted and upgraded. At first I thought it worked fine (i didn't had to change the policy for it to work and wireless networks work fine) but now my iPhone doesn't show in the network list.

I tried to downgrade, and then the iphone appeared again in the list but It seems to be be stuck when trying to get an IP addres.

The I thought it might be that I needed to pair my iPhone so I reiinstalled (from aur) ipheth-utils and paired the device, but it's the same

I also have MyWi and it worked fine just the day before yesterday.

So I guess It's three of us trying to get this working again

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Same problem for me. Using gentoo, and i beleive the 2.6.36 update killed the tethering. iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1. Phone shows tethering enabled, and i get this and nothing else in dmesg:
ipheth 1-1:4.2: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached

However, dhcpcd fails to get IP

As you mentioned, your phone still shows tethering and your dmesg still says the ethernet device is attached, therefore I think 2.6.36's ipheth driver is fine!

I should look more into the network manager problem. 0.8.2 brought other problems already...

Darkade, mywi works fine is very convenient, but since 4.1 it gets my phone all funky, the time goes crazy, all my older alerts from this past year from my calendar start popping up... ha

MyWi works fine over Wifi LOL. But in USB it doesn't work. I really think this is a Networkmanager problem, but as I said before downgrading did nothing for me. I'm posting the list of files that were updated when it stoped working, hopefully someone upgraded the same thing (besides networkmanager, nm-applet) and we can get somewhere from there

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Hi, same problem here...I'm trying to tether with an iphone 4 and it's driving me crazy...I'm running testing kernel 2.6.36 so the device is recognized correctly, but when I try to tether dhcpd fails...I tried pretty much everything I could: git packages, compiling the driver from aur and nothing worked...I saw in another post that it works just fine for someone so I really don't understand...I'd apprecciate any suggestion bucause, so far, tethering is my only chance of using the internet...thank you guys

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

Myself, I had other problems with the latest networkmanager and nm-applet, so I downgraded to 0.7.9. No effect on tethering.

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

@ELWisty
I have had a few problems with nm too... I am now all set with 8.2-2 (WiFI was not working basically...)
The main tricks were:
chmod 755 /var/libNetworkmanager
chmod 755 /var/libNetworkmanager/*
and chmod +x /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper

Anyway you might ant to try that.. I have not had a chance to look more into tethering.. but it sure still does not work! :s

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

i had a post saying that ipheth wouldnt work in 32bit but it does work normally en 64bit... i solved my problem back then with compiling ipheth-git from aur.... but yesterday i did an update with 'pacman -Syu' and now im back to no usb tethering.... i tried compiling again the ipheth-git with no luck... dhcpcd keeps waiting for carrier to get an IP address.... anyone got this to work?

Still not working for me. I don't know if the ipheth developer is active anymore...

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

No, not working. Phone's updated to 4.2.

errors.log says:

Nov 28 19:21:39 myhost NetworkManager[2008]: <error> [1290964899.825727] [nm-device-ethernet.c:730] real_update_permanent_hw_address(): (eth1): unable to read permanent MAC address (error 0)

Couldn't find anything useful on this.

Re: iPhone tethering - ipheth not working

I have the same problem. After upgrading to kernel 2.6.36, dhcpcd wont get IP from iPhone. I tried setting static IP with same config as on MS Win7, nut still no tethering.

Btw, i noticed the following in dmesg:

ipheth 2-3:4.2: Apple iPhone USB Ethernet device attached
usbcore: registered new interface driver ipheth
eth1: no IPv6 routers present

Don't know if it's important.
