On Identi.ca there were some posts about KOffice splitting:

http://lists.kde.org/?l=koffice-devel&m … 919625&w=2
Since then there is silence. Are the news true? Anybody knows some more info?

Well I skimmed the mailing list and it seems that it's really going to happen. However I didn't really understand why, what was the conflict of interest? There was some mumbling about MSO-format support and mobile platform support which both should be priorities for both sides, right? Someone also metioned too fast developement? If the developement happens in plug-in level, what's the problem? I also didn't quite get what was going to be forked, it can't be whole KOffice, right? I probably mixed the A&B-groups etc.
So if someone can put all this in laymen's terms I would be truly pleased.

The second link from above quite clearly shows why it's happening once one gets here:
http://lists.kde.org/?l=koffice-devel&m … 619277&w=2
and the subsequent follow ups. Within a few posts the devs start to point fingers at each other about their goals and intentions. The name calling begins and attempts at moderation start to appear. The disconnect between the developers is very apparent within four or five posts.

Sad news. KOffice project faces impossible odds as it is. Now it looks like hopeless waste of time and effort.

Two streams with different priorities. There is the effort to get KOffice successful for desktop usage which have a set of priorities; the most distinct one the end-user-readyness.
Next to that there is an effort to get a KOffice core and certain applications and the Microsoft filters in such a state that Meego can ship this with their own user interface on top. The most distinct priority is getting advanced MSOffice documents rendered properly.
Its an obvious conflict when the "end-user-readyness" has been taken too long time. As long as KOffice not able to save docs in MS format, no office users will use the application. The MS format is a must.

Wow, first OpenOffice, now KOffice?!
I had just put my faith in KOffice (having recently uninstalled OpenOffice) but it seems that the future of KOffice may already be in jeopardy. I really hope one of the two forks of KOffice is worth using.
@rasat: I disagree that saving as MS formats is an absolute necessity, and to say "no office users will use the application" is a bit much. There's always export to PDF. But yes, the majority of users who do work with MS formats on a regular basis will probably find OpenOffice a much better choice than KOffice.
