GD for PHP Version => 5.2.10

I have PHP Version => 5.2.10 and I don't want to upgrade because a certain webapp I run locally isn't ready for 5.3. But I want GD but if I just install gd-php I get php-gd-5.3.3-2 and then I get:

Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/20060613/gd.so' - libpng12.so.0: 
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

which I think is because it doesn't match. It's certainly there anyhow:

$ ls /usr/lib/php/20060613/gd.so -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 361138 Jul 14  2009 /usr/lib/php/20060613/gd.so

I installed libpng libjpeg freetype2 also of course.

So am I right that I need an earlier version? How can I downgrade this package?
