I've installed and upgraded (pacman -Syu) the system (Arch x86_64), installed hal, xorg and the entire xorg-video-drivers package group, but all i get when i run xinit is a screen with funny mixed pixels; nothing seems to work after that, it looks like neither the keyboard nor the mouse respond, but how would i know for sure...
i'm not a pro at all, i'm just used to hal handling everything neatly, but this is a new PC and it looks like hal doesn't manage on its own...
but i know there should be a solution, since i saw threads here about *audio* not working on this card; this probably means that video works for the people who wrote that

pacman -S nvidia

Wow, i have to admit i didn't try that... i feel stupid now.
Nevertheless, i executed that and it turns out that nvidia-utils and libgl are in conflict. but i can't remove libgl since there seem to be a bunch of *-dri packages depending on it...(ati-dri, intel-dri, mach64-dri, mga-dri, r128-dri, savage-dri, sis-dri, tdfx-dri). T_T

Thanks guys! I still have a lot to learn. I'm sure this will wok, but i can't check it yet becuse now suddenly it won't pick up my WiFi... >_< Was working great half an hour ago, nothing changed, but now after /etc/rc.d/net-profiles restart i get a "WPA Authentication/Association Failed."

don't forget to remove all the bloat that you installed. pacman -Rs xorg-video-drivers.
for your wireless problem, open a new thread
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Yeah, i'll try to sort it out by myself first, then if it doesn't work out, will start a thread.
Thanks for all the help, guys!!
(i will mark this thread solved as soon as i install nvidia drivers and actually get the thing to work)

Sadly, i spoke too soon... upon installing nvidia drivers, xinit now simply says "couldn't find screen, bla bla bla" and exits.
By the way i use hal and don't have any xorg.conf file.
