hey, I've search for help but all I get in hyperthreading..
Intel says it's multi-core(dualcore)

check out in the bios to see if multicore is enabled. i know i have such option in my dell laptop
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

no, the bois doesn't have that option.. Yet the Sony site and specs says the my cpu is dual-core but on linux, it shows only single....

Is this the whole output of cat /proc/cpuinfo ?
Dual core system should have "processor 0" + infos then "processor 1" + exact same infos
can you post the output of "grep processor /proc/cpuinfo"

The kernel is only detecting one of the cores

Bad ACPI tables in BIOS.
Try to play with some ACPI options in BIOS or with APIC options if you have.
You can try to boot with some acpi and apic debug info in kernel command line parameters like: acpi.debug_layer=0x20000000 and/or apic=debug or apic=verbose
Offline
I've heard of similar problem from a dude from local tech forum, said that Arch found only 2 processors instead of 4 on his Q9300
We tried with several kernel parametars but to no avail...
/edit: I agree that that probable cause could be bad ACPI tables, but this is most certainly a regression introduced with 2.6.35 kernel (worked ok previously).
for OP : Could you try with LTS kernel from repos ?

got tons of acpi errors about the fan etc... did I fix one issue and created a new one? Don't wanna mark solved yet.
CHANGED MY MIND, MARKING THIS AS SOLVED... system runs way better with acpi=off
thanx guys!
