[solved] disable touchpad

Hi all.

I'm trying to disable the touchpad from my laptop (Sony Vaio E)
When I run

synclient TouchpadOff=1

I get this

Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

I have installed xf86-input-synaptics and xf86-input-evdev.. so, any help?

Re: [solved] disable touchpad

you need to enable SHMConfig to control your touchpad via synclient

Option "SHMConfig" "on" in the touchpad section of your relevant xorg config file (either /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf)

then check if the option is enabled in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Looks like it is you touchpad. It is called Sony Vaio Jogdial instead of Synaptics toucpad so your config doenst work. Modify the apropriate section(Identifier).

Re: [solved] disable touchpad

Hmm. I dont see any detection of touchpad then. Except possible
[    26.434] (II) config/udev: Adding input device ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse (/dev/input/event5)
but I believe its a mouse. Isnt it?
BTW, if your laptop has a button for enabling/disabling touchpad try it)

Re: [solved] disable touchpad

I donn't have any connected external mouse on the laptop
maybe touchpad is detected like that?

how can I determine the exact name to put on xorg.conf?

Re: [solved] disable touchpad

Well, if no mouses are connected then it is for sure your touchpad and probably due to bug somewhere it is detected as mouse.
As a workaround you may try this(unable to check so provide feedabck)
Create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf like this one:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad catch"
        MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
        MatchProduct "ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse"
        Driver "synaptics"
          Option        "Optname"             "Optvalue"
EndSection

I believe it should work if you are using xorg-server newer than 1.9. BTW you can delete touchpad section from xorg.conf

Re: [solved] disable touchpad

I mean your /var/log/Xorg.0.log. As now you have that synaptics.conf added, the log file should' ve changed...

As it is seen upwards now X trying to load synaptics driver for your device, however it fails. Well, you can try to alter a bit that synaptics.conf by removing line with MatchDevicePath, but I'm afraid it will not help. Give it a try anyway, if it doenst help you should wait for newer version of synaptics driver/kernel where this bug will be resolved. A good idea is to search for this issue in Arch bugtracker, xorg-synaptics bugtracker and everywhere else) maybe patch exists. I'll try to find time to do some research myself.
