I am having a very difficult time installing arch linux on to my netbook. Before it turns over the command line to me, it prints the following lines:
Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201005 ...
sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
" " Assuming drive cache: write through
ERROR: boot device didnt show up after 30 seconds...
/bin/sh: cant access tty; job control turned off.
[ramfs /]# _
I have googled this several times, and I have found some threads on here but It seems I still cannot fix the problem. I'm using the latest arch linux iso with uNetBootin to have a bootable flashdrive. I currently do not have access to an external cd drive to try a live cd. I have ubuntu 10.04 on sda1, and I gave arch an 80 gig partition on sda4 formatted to ext3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I cant say exactly what but it looks like theres something wrong with one of the grub lines, have you tried editing them or reinstaling grub even.

Did you install grub with Arch or keep Ubuntus, which is Grub2 isn't it? This page could be helpful

Right, I'll move it to a new thread. Thanks.

So I tried use dd to install also and that also has failed, BUT I tried a different software pendriveinstaller to make a live usb of arch linux and it successfully booted and I was able to install. So I didn't fix the problem just found a way around it. Thank you for all your help. Now I must figure out if I can get my wireless to detect and connect to networks.

So I tried use dd to install...
I do hope you tried using dd to copy the install iso to your thumb drive... and not to install the iso on your hdd...

I'm having the same problem here.
Last night my laptop shut down due to lack of power It dualboots Win7 and Arch, neither of which run:
Here's the error I'm getting:
-----
EXT4-fs (sda6): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist.
Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
[ramfs /]#
-----
Booting into Win7 yields:
BOOTMGR is missing
___
I've booted up a KNOPPIX Livecd and the filesystem appears ok. Can I just try and reinstall GRUB, as I'm assuming that's what the problem is?
Thanks in advance,
Jacques
