Switching from KDE to something else

When I set up Arch Linux, I chose KDE as my desktop environment, but now that I'm actually using it, I don't really like it all that much as I had thought. I know that I can change to another, but what I'm wanting to know, is if I'll lose all my Firefox configurations. I've tweaked FF and added a ton of addons to it that I need, so I'm a little leery about possibly losing that. I don't really mind losing anything else though.

No you will not lose your configurations for your programs.

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

firefox does not depend exclusively on kde or any other DE or WM. it can run on most of them, and even on plain X. so if you remove kde, it will keep running on any other environment that you choose to use from now on. of course, in case the config is very important, it is never a bad idea to cp ~/.mozilla ~/firefox-config-backup from time to time, just to make sure the information is a bit more safeguarded.

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

Your firefox configuration is stored in $HOME/.mozilla/firefox.

And other programs usually follow the same path to save configurations smile

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

Problem hmm

I have Xfce ready to go with everything installed, but I edited ~/.initrc to say this:

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.initrc
#
exec ck-launch-session startxfce4

But when I start it up using "startx" on the terminal it goes right back to KDE. Any ideas as to why?

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

The file should be named ~/.xinitrc I think.

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

Nevahmind. Newbie mistake. I followed the wiki instructions to installing Xfce and when it told me:

To install the base Xfce system, run:
pacman -S xfce4

If you want extras, like panel plugins, run this:
"pacman -S xfce4-goodies"

I used the second command, thinking it would install the base system along with the "goodies"

Re: Switching from KDE to something else

If you ran the second command, run the first one now. You could've just combined them into "pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies".
