[ SOLVED ] printer error message

Hi All

I have just installed arch 64 with openbox as a standalone WM.  I have samba & cups etc installed, but when i try to set up my network printer and try to print a test page, i get the following error message

'Unsupported format 'application/vnd.cups-banner'!'

I have search around but cant find any solutions that work ...  Can anyone help please ?

Many Thanks

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

Have you tried uninstalling/installing cups again? Also it would be helpful if you provide the full log file.

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

Try adding "acl" to the options for the partition where your /var filesystem is located in your /etc/fstab file, for example:

/dev/sda1 / ext4 defaults,commit=60,nodiratime,noatime,acl 0 1

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

I wouldn't add the acl mount option, unless if you need acls. Cups will work perfectly fine without acl support is the filesystem (you will just a get a few errors).

Can you tell us a bit about the printer setup? Is the printer connected to a windows machine? If that is the case you would use smb:/// with some different parameters. You would not use ipp://localhost:631/printers/EpsonPrinter

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

Can you post the error log when you use smb:/// I don't see any message about the error you describe in the error log you posted above.

Also please use the [ code ] blocks

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

Well i think what sorted the problem might have been to edit cupsd.conf

SystemGroup    lpadmin
listen localhost:631
listen *:631

I also had to install foomatic-filters & ghostscript too ....

The printer is perfect now.

I am going to be writing a noobies how to for Arch & Openbox soon ......

Re: [ SOLVED ] printer error message

I had this problem and managed to figure it out.

What client-error-document-format-not-supported means is that cups failed to decode the file you sent it, now why would if fail to decode you ask? Because cups relies on something called filters to translate between different formats, your printer driver comes with a filter to converts each document that passes trough it into a language the printer understands (PostScript, EPL, CBJ, ESCP/E, etc.), but cups also needs filters that convert your input into an intermediate language that filter from the driver understands, and those filters are provided by the package cups-filters, without it you have to provide lpr with a file that matches one of the mime types that your driver natively supports.

TL;DR: Error client-error-document-format-not-supported / Unsupported format xx = pacman -S cups-filters
