I've started making some of my own packages with the AUR for programs that weren't avaliable in the core, extra, community repositories and have had some success.
I've done this the manual arch way using makepkg with PKGBUILD files.
I'd like to start using ABS to replace some of the core, extra, and commuity packages as a way to learn before getting to compile my own kernel and initramfs stuff.
I've been reading over things and I think I understand them for the most part.
However the part that keeps eluding me is locally compiled package tracking and updates, I don't understand where/how/if this occurs for the ABS?
I've added a few small programs from the AUR and those I just manually check every know and then for a new version PKGBUILD. Recently I found a few that pointed directy to SVN or GIT repositories and would always just grab the newest version. Is the best/only way to track new updates?
The older I get the less time I have.

Search the wiki for AUR helpers, a few of them do this. Actually, just search first before posting questions, for any questions you may have.
