I installed Arch on my main computer at first and had some problems, so I tried my backup pc.
It installed fine apart from the fact that it locked the CD drive. Turning off the pc and trying to open the cd while booting did not work, I had to use a paper clip to get the cd drive open with the power off.
I reinstalled Arch shortly afterwards (I had made some mistakes the first time) and the same thing happened the 2nd time. This problem did not occur on the first PC on which I tried Arch.
I don't know if there are further cd problems waiting to happen with this install I am happily trying out window managers right now. So it may be a problem I will need to solve later.
The CD drive is a Lite-on drive, not sure which model as I don't take much interest in the cd drive these days when buying a pc.

Did you try
eject -m
Also you can try to open tray before Arch is booting. Just press Pause/Break key on first screen (POST - Power On Self Test).

I will try what you suggested, but I couldn't open the cd even if I booted into Windows or Slackware.
Yes there was a CD in, I had just finished installing Arch.

if there is a disk, maybe the drive is trying to read it with no success.
it happened to me many times.
it can be a faulty disk or faulty drive.

You could try to open tray with a needle (or something similar) - http://tips4weblife.blogspot.com/2007/1 … drive.html
