I used the wireless instalation guide from the wiki and did the following steps from a fresh install (these were the first commands of the installation):
# wget aur.archlinux.org/packages/b43-firmware/b43-firmware.tar.gz
# tar xvf b43-firmware.tar.gz
# cd b43-firmware
# pacman -Syu
# pacman -S b43-fwcutter
# makepkg
# pacman -U <name of b43-firmware package file>
# wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
# tar xvf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
# cd broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/linux
# b43-fwcutter -w "/lib/firmware" wl_apsta.o
# depmod
# reboot
Now I have an interface called wlan0. I can run iwlist wlan0 scan with no problems and I can run iwconfig wlan0 essid HOME with no problems. Once I have done this, I can run iwconfig wlan0 and see the network's information. It's all correct/reasonable. Then when I go to run dhcpcd wlan0, it just times out. If I go to ifconfig, the interface is up. Everything seems to be ok, but it can't connect. I have gotten this laptop's wifi card to work before using these steps just yesterday (but then I had to reinstall).
lspci | grep Network
03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
dhcpcd wlan0 -d
wlan0: executing `/usr/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason PREINIT
wlan0: executing '/usr/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-run-hooks', reason NOCARRIER
wlan0: waiting for carrier
then it just freezes and I have to ^C
does anybody know about this?

This is basically the same problem I'm having with my Dell laptop.

Neither I, nor anyone else, has figured out what's going wrong.
