### Dictionary can be used to store key=value lists. This is used by several
# plugins. The dictionary can be accessed either directly or though a

#expire = sqlite:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf.ext

I had the same problem when there was a new version of dovecot which I had installed ...
I can't remember what exactly I changed, but here's mine .conf so it should be helpful to you ....

Did you try the suggested:
doveconf -n -c dovecot.conf > dovecot-2.conf
where dovecot.conf is your 1.x series config and dovecot-2.conf is the fixed one, to be moved in the right path?
It worked for me (but I needed to fix my sieve stuff by hand with the new plugin).
