I've been bothered, lately, by a lag while typing. Taking a look at my CPU usage, I can see the X spike up to 30-45% while typing. Happens anywhere. Firefox, terminal, OOO, whatever. Doesn't seem normal -- and my laptop should be quick enough. It's a Lenovo T400.

Perhaps I should try some other WMs, but I'm onto my third. I thought I had it solved here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107455, but I imagined that.
Can anyone give me advice about the best way to debug this kind of issues? I don't know where to start looking. Let me know what other details would be useful. I'm often using xrandr to get onto two monitors, but it doesn't make a difference.
What usage do you get on X under low-load stuff like typing?

Ah, thanks so much. A lot of that seems to describe my issues -- thanks for the pointer, Karol. It's definitely somewhat better with nohz=off. I'll work through the suggestions on that thread.
Just an update if anyone else finds this -- I rolled back the kernel (all the way to 2.6.33 -- all I had in my cache), and I feel like I've got a new computer.
load average: 0.07, 0.17, 0.14Under light browsing, typing this post, etc.

I am so happy, I think I will just roll around and smell the sweet scent of 2.6.33 for awhile -- but I'll take a look once I recover.
