How are people tagging files from a double disc set with CD1 and CD2. I'm using mpd with ario and CD1 and CD2 gets smeared together giving multiple track 1, track2, etc.

I just put it in the album title:
Album (disc 1) / Album (disc 2)
MPD then first lists the disc 1 tracks.

I thought of that but then two entries appear for the album in the albums view.... is there no way to force it to honor the "CD" number?

I think you can also use the "disc" tag, which is an official tag like artist, album etc.

Use the disc tag. Any good music manager will be able to keep them sorted with that.

They are tagged with the correct disc tag... I'm floored that mpd doesn't just use that by default.

For FLAC files, I always refer to the vorbis comment specification here.
As per wikipedia, DISCNUMBER should be what you need for FLAC/OGG files:
Most applications also support common de facto standards, such as DISCNUMBER

I'll have a look, thanks for the suggestions.

you can rename the track numbers to 101, 102, 103 and 201,202,203 etc

The problem with with the tagging software I used (cdtag). It didn't write the disc numbers correctly. I have since discovered ncmpcpp which totally rocks AND has support for tags. I have corrected them and all is well.
