Alienware M9750 ALC889A sound not quite right

okay okay, alienware bashing aside, this box runs reasonably well with just one hitch: Sound isn't perfect. ALSA runs beautifully... except for something Realtek did to the chipset: Splitting outputs.

Under windows, I have to have the Realtek drivers installed for this chip or I get sound through either speakers only or headphones only (per-app, even. this comes kinda in handly occasionally?)

Under Linux, I get to turn off if sound goes through the headphones or speakers.... Which doesn't do me much good. I have to pull up alsamixer by hand, check that I have the right thing plugged in, then go and mute the speakers/headphones.

A) does anyone know of a way to figure out what the hell is going on and
B) If so, what do I do?

All I want is for sound to transition between speakers and headphones when I put in the headphones or remove them.
