Hi there,
i`ve just switched to archlinux but i`m still not sure how to built up my desktop. I stumbled across this thread and i think i like the idea of a standalone desktop with compiz.
But so far i`ve some problems and questions. Maybe someone here can give me a hint:All panels i`ve tried so far (awn,xfce4-panel,lxpanel,fbpanel) are not able to display only the windows from the current desktop in the taskpanel. I`ve set "virtual desktops" in ccsm to "2" and vertical desktops to "2" too. As far as i know, at least awn and xfc4-panel should be capable of compiz virtual desktops. Any suggestions?
Another question is: What do i have to configure my self when i`m not using a full DE? How do you mount e.g. USB devices? What other things do i have to keep in mind, when using standalone compiz?
I`m thankful for any answers
Did you install the awn-extras-applets package? That installs the shiny switcher plugin which is what I use. It works here.
Your other question depends on the applications you're running. Basically your best option is to just use them and spot things you're missing.

Robert, your questions don't belong in a screenshot thread. Start a new thread, or better, one thread per question.

@Unia Thanks, i`ll give this a try, but i somehow think this is a more general Problem.
@frabjous: I know, and i did open such a thread
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126061
But so fare no one answered and i think the thread is already drowned in the new threads ;/... but if you have any suggestions i`m happy to hear them in the other thread
greetz,
Robert

Gotta bump this topic again! Here's my Compiz standalone, with AWN dock:
Switched to PCManFM instead of Nautilus, lighter and it handles iPods!
The only thing I miss is the ability to add a global menu to AWN

Check out GnoMenu or the Main Menu Applet.

Ditched AWN for tint2 It's lighter + has a battery monitor built it, AWN's kept crashing and others didn't work..
SanskritFritz, I'm not talking about a menu, but a global menu Like this:
