Hi,
I have an issue with pacman. Anytime I want to do an upgrade (or install some package), before each download pacman takes a break of about 15 seconds (even downloading the package databases). I have tried switching my mirror and reinstalling pacman. My download speed is alright and sould not be the issue. I do not know what I can do from here on
.

There have been several threads about this that a forum search should reveal. Here's one of the more recent threads:

It appears that an upcoming version of pacman will help with this issue.
edit:
oops... after reading your message again, it appears more to be the ftp mirror issue as suggested above by falconindy.

Thank you very much for your replies but unfortunately none of them helped
. I think I will let it be and hope it gets solved with an update of pacman.

If it is happening between the download of packages, then it is a network issue (because pacman does nothing between package downloads).

Avoid using ftp mirrors.
Sorry but it happens on http sites too - for me anyway.

Check to see whether one or more of the DNS servers are having problems. Try reordering the DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf

@skunktrader:
You were right, it was a DNS issue after all. I noticed that when wgetting some file it took the long break resolving the hostname. Using my router as DNS server works like a charme
. I wonder why chromium worked flawlessly though. Thank you very much for your help.
