I'm able to add my printer using the cups web interface. My driver is HP LaserJet 1018 Foomatic/foo2zjs-z1 (recommended)
However I can't print a test page: http://pastebin.com/agyn47u6
The key line (I think):
D [02/Dec/2010:18:33:37 -0800] [Job 11] STATE: -media-empty-error,media-jam-error,hplip.plugin-error,cover-open-error,toner-empty-error,other
Some output:
lsusb
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 03f0:4117 Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 1018
I tried loading and unloading usblp, rebooting, restarting cups, etc. I'm at my wit's end. Can someone help me get printing to work?
EDIT -- ran hp-plugin and got a test page to work, finally.
EDIT 2 -- after a reboot i can't get printing again. tried hp-plugin but still nothing. not happy.

Do you have hplip installed? If you don't you need to.
Have you checked out the information in the wiki?
You need to install the hpijs for the printer driver not the foomatic driver.
I don't have that specific printer, but another HP model and always use the hpijs driver and don't have any problems getting it to work.

I think it's fixed. Here's what I did:
1 -- UNINSTALL hplip -- it does weird things to to the device listing
2 -- Follow instructions here: http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/
3 -- Load and unload the usblp drive (allows the firmware to reach your printer)
4 -- (most importantly) Do you favorite rain dance, pray to the linux printing gods, etc
And for me, it worked!

You could use foo2zjs from AUR instead of the instructions from "2". It's a little bit easier.
