Troubles with external harddrive, it becomes unresponsive

I have some troubles with my external drive, usually I can mount it fine, but after some hours I can no longer access it, nor unmount it successfully.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot? I tried fsck /dev/sdb9 and it does a short analysis reporting things to be ok. Is there a program for more indepth analysis?

At these times I find that the laptop hangs up during shutdown at "Unmounting filesystems"

Perhaps your laptop switches the USB port/hub into powersaving mode while the drive is connected?  Run dmesg and see if there are any messages at the time the drive cannot be  accessed.
