I am trying to install Arch Linux on a netbook (lenovo ideapad s10-3s), however, I couldn't get the wired networking to work. 'ifconfig' only shows the loopback interface ('lo'). What am I missing here? This model comes with a Broadcom Netlink card, which uses tg3 driver, which is included in the standard Arch Linux kernel.
Additional information:
Here is the output of dmesg after 'modprobe tg3':
tg3.c:v3.106 (January 12, 2010)
tg3 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
tg3 0000:05:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
tg3 mdio bus: probed
eth%d: No PHY devices
tg3: Problems fetching invariants of chips, aborting.
tg3 0000:05:00.0 PCI INT A disabled.
So, there is a problem loading the driver. However, I am able to use tg3 driver to connect to the internet on another distro (MeeGo 1.1).
Any idea of what causes this? Now I am guessing that there is a problem with the kernel configuration, so I will try to re-configure the kernel and see how it goes.
Nevermind, I think I hit this bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=BCM57780. The solution is to load broadcom before loading tg3. And maybe this bug has been fixed in the newer kernel.
Anyway, thanks for reading this. Next time I should try to google some more before posting to the forum.
