[SOLVED] GeForce Fx5200 and UDev kernel panic

When I boot and have set the BIOS to use my FX 5200 video card as primary, I get a kernel panic following the start of the UDev auto-detection (I think) the only way to restart the machine is by using the power button so nothing appears in the logs.

When I set the onboard video card as primary I can boot into Arch no problem.

If anyone can help that would be great.

Let me know if you would like me to post any files or logs.

Maybe show us the output of lspci particularly for the integrated adapter.  Do you have any old incompatible video drivers (depends on what the integrated adapter is) or modules removed that are not relevant to the FX 5200?  Any BIOS updates possible?  Just throwing out some possibilities.

Re: [SOLVED] GeForce Fx5200 and UDev kernel panic

here is the output from lspci for the onboard graphics card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

and for the FX 5200 card:

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

As far as I can tell there are no BIOS updates available.

I have the intel video driver installed but I do not know if it incompatible.  I have tried installing the appropriate nvidia drivers (and removing the intel ones) and that did not appear to help.

Thanks for the quick reply.

What about disabling the onboard graphics?...

Yeah I would try disabling the onboard video in BIOS and then also blacklist the Intel module in your /etc/rc.conf file in the MOD_BLACKLIST line. But first of all make sure you have the correct nVidia driver loaded - for the FX5200 I think its the 173 or 179 driver...

Re: [SOLVED] GeForce Fx5200 and UDev kernel panic

Thanks for the quick replies.

I will be trying you suggestions tomorrow (the machine is at work).

As for disabiling the onboard card in the BIOS the best I can do is select what the BIOS calls the primary card.  When I select PCI I get no output on the onboard card and vice versa.  By selecting PCI this leads to the kernel panic during the UDev auto-load.  I have not yet tried with having the intel module blacklisted.

Re: [SOLVED] GeForce Fx5200 and UDev kernel panic

Success, by blacklisting intel-agp and i915 (the intel modules) I was able to boot up successfully using the FX 5200 card.

Thanks for all the help
