[SOLVED] shutdown and restart buttons missing from kde menu

Hi, I'm using kde 4.5.4 on Arch x86_64. I've cannot seem to find a conclusive fix/reason for this issue. Somewhere along the line of updating kde, the shutdown and restart icons disappeared from the kde menu and the widget that offers shutdown only opens the logout countdown window. It's possible I did something to cause this, but I don't know what.

I've checked that "system settings->session management->offer shutdown options" is checked and "system settings->login screen->shutdown->local" is set to everybody, as some have suggested on other forums.

My user should be part of the necessary groups to shutdown/restart (not sure what steps kde goes through performing its shutdown from the menu): .. wheel optical storage power ..

I have also tried removing ~/.kde* and /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, and reinstalling all the kde packages I had installed. No change in this behavior. I have kde set to launch through kdm through /etc/inittab.

I can shutdown/restart the system from the command line, but I would like the menu to work again. My home computer has the same pacakges installed and does not have this issue.

Thanks for any ideas.

How do you start KDE? You can compare ~/.xinitrc files in your computers. I'm not a KDE guru, but IIRC you should start KDE with

exec ck-launch-session startkde

I start KDE through /etc/inittab in the same way as the wiki, on both machines.

Re: [SOLVED] shutdown and restart buttons missing from kde menu

I uninstalled all KDE related pacakges from the system and removed ~/.kde*. I then ran `pacman -Sy kdebase phonon-xine`, and launched KDE from gdm, through /etc/inittab. This is still an issue.. KDE's "Leave" menu still does not have Shutdown or Restart under the System category.

As far as I know, you have to start KDE using *kdm* for the buttons to work.

Yes, I use either gdm or kdm, selecting one manager or the other in /etc/inittab to use when runlevel 5 is started.. I don't use a ~/.xinitrc file or `startx`. It actually seems to be the same issue as this thread, which I didn't notice until now:

Re: [SOLVED] shutdown and restart buttons missing from kde menu

I had the $DISPLAY variable set to something other than ':0' .. so I suppose KDE thought of itself as connecting to a remote TCP X session and wouldn't allow shutdown or restart from the menu. Thanks for the replies.

Re: [SOLVED] shutdown and restart buttons missing from kde menu

When I start x on boot through inittab with the .xinitrc line "exec ck-launch-session startkde", I get no reboot or shutdown options.  When I then kill x and restart it from virtual terminal, these options appear, without any kdm/gdm installed.
