[SOLVED] Xinit Issue

Hello all,

Yesterday I did updated xorg-xinit which I think is what triggered this issue - because about half an hour later, X froxe completely to the point that I had to do a hard power off. Since then X won't start - I use startx from the cmdline to start it up.

If, after running startx I quickly switch to ctrl+al+F2 I can move between ttys okay and use the laptop, but when I try and startx, if I switch to ctrl+al+F7 I get a black screen, and it completely locks up - however the sof power reset works (in that itinitiates a shutdown).

Here's the Xorg.0.log

xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused

waiting for X server to shut down
xinit: server error
xauth: file /home/skanky/.Xauthority does not exist

Which I'm thinking is a result of the server not finishing its start-up?
I've done some searches, and reading but I'm not totally sure what (if any) of the above I should be searching on.

Incidentally the .Xauthority used to exist with this error - I accidentally removed it trying to debug late last night (I gave up at that point as I didn't want to mess stuff up any more). The error was still occurring.

I've run reflector and done a full upgrade so I don't think I've got a partial upgrade.

Any other pointers welcome. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

Okay, should have done this earlier, but I tracked down the change made to xorg-xinit in the update from 1.3.0-1 to 1.3.0-2. This was simply adding "$@" to the end of xserverrc to fix bug #22134. I deleted it and X now starts as before.

Sooo...the next question is, what parameters are being passed to the xserver that causes it to fail?
Would the fault lie in my xinitrc? I thought that was just ane executable?

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

wrt to the .Xauthority thing:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 53#p491053

Abut the parameter, are you asking about

/bin/login -f
 \_ -dash
     \_ /bin/sh /usr/bin/startx
         \_ xinit /home/karol/.xinitrc -- /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc :0 -auth /tmp/serverauth.n8vAzGElnP
             \_ /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp
             \_ /bin/sh /home/karol/.xinitrc

?

Thanks for the response.

?

You mean that -auth may be giving me the problem? I notice that there is a serverauth in tmp created when I successfully started X (after deleting the "$@" - so the file is being created. Not sure why I'm getting the failure with it. I'll have a read up of what -auth does.

Thanks. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

Not sure how to interpret this (I am trying as I write to figure it out) but I was "sourcing" startx (. startx) in my .zprofile and here it stopped working as well with the new update. Executing it fixes it here (eg. dropping the dot). I read the manpage and it says that executing vs sourcing has the effect of running startx in a new subshell and the change in variables is lost. So maybe a variable that is altered in startx should not be altered, before running xinit in startx?

EDIT

Btw, echoing all the parameters passed to xinit either with sourcing or with executing are similar (only the /tmp/serverauth.XXXXX changes and afaik thats normal)

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

Hmm thanks for that. I was just typing startx in to run it as I sometimes don't bother going into X (quick email checks, etc.). So I was effectively doing what you are doing now. Which is odd.

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

I had same issue, and this workaround helped me to start X. Then I tried to find root cause of this issue, and, in my case, it were wrong ownership and permissions on ~/.Xauthority file ("-rwxr-xr-x root root" instead of "-rw------- user user"). I removed .Xauthority, and now everything works fine with xorg-xinit 1.3.0-2.

This is the right thing to do.

wrt to the .Xauthority thing:

Setting $XAUTHORITY is hacky, because (a) this is controlled by the "xhost" command, (b) root should not need any access to user's X session (in fact, complete isolation of the two is preferred from the security standpoint).

Regarding .xserverrc, you can avoid this "$@" thing by creating an alias (which you should have done anyway):

alias StartX='/usr/bin/startx -- -nolisten tcp'

because it's a security measure

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

I fixed this while I was away (limited internet access so I didn't report here), by generating a new .Xauthority file using xauth. I forget the exact set of steps, but it involved using generate, then add options. A search should come up with several different sites that show how to do it. I'll mark it as solved.

Re: [SOLVED] Xinit Issue

Maybe editing /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc will be less hackish:

[karol@black ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@"
