A few days ago after a reboot my optical output just stoped working and I did not save my alsa settings. I think all that I did to make it work before was go to gnome volume control program and turn on the switch for IEC958. This is no longer working for me. I am not able to get any error messages, I just don't get sound. Also as a note of peculiar behavior, when I turn up the capture 1 under the Recording tab I here white noise (presumably the playback of that input). Not sure what this means but it is at least proof that my hardware set up is working.
$ aplay -D plug:iec958 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, MonoResults in a faint click or popping sound like it is about to play audio but audio cannot be heard. I have every output volume turned up to max.
This plays fine when headphone switch is turned on via headphone port in front of computer.
$ aplay -r 48000 -D plug:default /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

}The reason I am posting this is because without some sort of error I am having trouble trying to figure out what to fix. Anybody have any idea what the problem may be or possibly something to try in order to isolate the problem. Please help me I have been staring at this problem for about six hours now.
Thanks

I think I may have at least found out what the problem is. The person in this thread
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get- … dif-3.html
had a similar problem to mine and it was solved by
The answer is that IEC958 Loop should be muted.
Then there is sound from SPDID
This would make sense because the only sound output I can get is via turning up the capture. I still; however don't know how to use this solution because I have no IEC958 Loop switch.
The switchs that I have are:
Headphones
IEC958
IEC958 Capture
IEC958 Default PCM
I have tried every combination of these and none work. I only get output on my optical cable if IEC958 is enabled. The others have no effect on the digital out.

I'm having the exact same problem as you, I rebooted for the first time in a while last night and have been completely unable to figure out why the s/pdif out is not working. I'm using coax instead of optical but I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

As a work around for the time being, installing oss and using that seems to work okay. Well better than ALSA is currently.
Offline
Thanks for the fix. OSS seems to be working much better but I would still much prefer to use alsa.
