Happy new KDE user

after many years of Gnome I finaly gave myself a try on KDE and it works very well.
Evolution just was driving me crazy more often then needed, so I startet with Kontact but finally ended up with the full KDE package.
At the same time installed dual boot Windows 7 but these guys can not catch up with the snappy KDE.
Great work of KDE team, and guess Gnome really has to speed up if they want to remain in a good shape, if it is not already to late for them.

Just out of curiousity, are those specs correct? You have 4GB of ram in an old 600Mhz machine?

I'm a happy KDE user too although I changed to the Frugalware icons because they look better IMO. Mind you the jury is still out on Amarok

Re: Happy new KDE user

I switched from GNOME to KDE about 8 months ago (about the same time I left Ubuntu behind...hmmm....), and I don't see myself going back.  I love the advanced interface and window management features it comes with by default, and the nice little bit of eye candy it provides.  I still like GNOME, though, and hope version 3 works out the way they'd like it to.  It seems a lot of folks are pretty wary of its development track, and you don't have to look too hard to find some forum thread or blog post about people planning to switch to another DE or WM because of it.  Of course, it took about two-and-a-half years for KDE 4 to really start maturing, too, so... smile

Re: Happy new KDE user

Ahhh KDE. I've always loved the KDE project and all the applications associated with it. Amarok, Digikam, Rekonq, all the kdepim stuff, Krita, K3B.... just to name a few of the *excellent* applications associated with KDE. For a long time has some of these softwares been considered the best in their genre.

Having said that, I've switched to i3 now and a bunch of super light applications, but my respect for this project has never diminished.

I remember the days of KDE 4.0, it wasn't too bad but certainly rather unstable especially plasma. The backlash against amarok 2.x was stronger than I remember, I never thought it was a bad player but now I'm on Clementine due to not being able to right click in amarok.

I just looked it up since I'm a little obcessed sometimes, and it should be a core2duo between 1.8GHz to 2.2GHz and the ram should actually be DDR2@800Mhz. KDE must run really well, specially with Arch. I have an Eee PC1000H also with arch and kde and it's the best operating system I had in this computer. I'm also very impressed just how good the whole thing is (except Kmail).

I think Kmail is one of the projects currently caught in the chaos of the switch-over to a pure Akonadi setup.  I've never used a desktop mail client myself, but it seems this (and KOrganizer, KAddressBook, etc.) are all in a weird state of flux, and seem really cluttered at the moment.

Re: Happy new KDE user

I just recently switched from GNOME to KDE as well.

Previously I had tried KDE4 multiple times, but wound up just -Rns'ing it and going back to GNOME within about 20 minutes of use.
A few days ago I realized that I have customized GNOME so much and use so many non-gnome programs that I'm basically only using gnome panel. Besides, I never got a full grasp on the Plasma concept... so I tried KDE again. This time I stuck with it for longer and I think I'll be sticking with it for a while. I still prefer the look and feel of GNOME to be honest... KDE still feels bloated and unnecessarily large (physically... it looks way too spacious), while GNOME seems to feel less bloated and is more space-conservative... but Plasma is pretty awesome to say the least. Realistically, I know that even GNOME is pretty bloated when compared to my Openbox installation... but it doesn't feel or look like it to me.

Anyway, thus far, I'm finally impressed by KDE.

Re: Happy new KDE user

I love KDE but the problem is that it uses a lot of RAM and CPU. My machine is ~5 years old, so it is hard for me to use KDE without some lags. Therefore I am currently using GNOME with some KDE applications. But I will surely use KDE when I get a new PC.

It depends on how you configure it to look. Here's an example of my dolphin tailored to suit the typical 1024x600 netbook resolution: kdemydolphin.th.png

I could have included the information panel below the places one, but I prefer the tooltips option for showing extra information.

PS: This is the output of free -m after the above screenshot was taken with 3 chromium tabs open. I'm running apache and mysql as well.
