Using custom cursor themes with Compiz

Hello, I use GNOME with Compiz as a Window manager and GTK window decorator. My problem is, that I can't change my cursor theme completely while using Compiz. In appearance settings of GNOME I select DMZ (my desired cursor theme), but nothing really seems to happen, it is only active when I type metacity --replace. I also noticed some weird behavior: sometimes the DMZ pointer does appear (for example when the cursor is hovered over a link). I've tried this tutorial, it didn't work.
