nvidia does not install after pacman -Syu

Hi there,

I did a pacmyn -Syu yesterday night and didn't notice that this one includes a kernel as well as an nvidia update :oops:
Well, I did notice, when the nvidia install returned an error stating that modules.dep could not be found.
I took a look at /lib/modules and of course the modules now reside in a new directory named 2.6.11-ARCH, instead of the one it is looking in (2.6.10-ARCH).
As a quick workaround I switched from nvidia to nv, but I didn't have time to read the nvidia manual (somewhere on nvidia.com) mentioned in the error message.
As I cannot search for the solution these next days (easterholidays  ), I only wanted to know if anybody hit the same problem and if there is a simple solution to it...

Do you use lilo?  If so, have you run "lilo" as root after upgrading the kernel?

I've read in these forums about some problems about the new nvidia drivers.  Do a forum search.

sounds like you updated kernel and nvidia at the same time that cannot work.
please try again:
pacman -S nvidia then all should be fine

Yes, when you install the nvidia package, the module is compiled for your running kernel, so I think you must firstly install the new kernel, then reboot your computer to log into the new kernel and finally do pacman -S nvidia (remember, the last step must be done outside X).

This goes to show that it's never a good idea to update your system after a long day at 3am...
Of course you forget to reboot after you see the nvidia error message.
Ofcourse will nvidia try to locate the modules in the _old_ kernel folder.

Well thanks for the advice anyway. A little thinking on my part would have helped...   :oops:
