Hard Drive Noisy Every Few Seconds

I recently installed Arch on my Lenovo U350 laptop. Every few seconds, the hard drive makes a half-a-second whining noise followed by half-a-second spinning noise. This happens with laptop-tools started as well as with laptop-tools stopped. Do you have any idea what it could be/how to stop it? It doesn't do this on Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows 7.

Re: Hard Drive Noisy Every Few Seconds

Maybe it spins down to conserve power.
try as root:
hdparm -S0 /dev/sda (or whatever your drive is called) which disables the standby feature, or -S255 to have an high timeout value (about 20 minutes)

Re: Hard Drive Noisy Every Few Seconds

Yep, that seems to have done it. I actually missed this on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/La … wn_problem
I used 128 which seems like a reasonable middleground!

Thank you.
