Apparently I can't disable sync-to-vblank [SOLVED]

On my Aspire 3680, which has the Intel 945 graphics chipset...

$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

And of course the FPS is actually about half the monitor refresh rate, due to the slow hardware. So I install driconf and select the "Never synchronize with vertical refresh. Ignore application's choice." option. Restart X, try glxgears again...

$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

Tried the other two options for disabling the synchronization... No dice.

I kind of suspect that sync-to-vblank is what's causing my cursor to freeze under load, so I'd like to disable it and see where that gets me... But it's looking like I can't disable it the usual way. Help?

And the answer, for anyone interested, is to put 'export vblank_mode=0' somewhere that bash will read it. Sorry folks, I'm feeling a bit stupid tonight.

Edit: Also, for those looking for a solution to the cursor freezes, this won't fix 'em. Dang.
